Baba Amte
Renowned Social Worker Baba Amte
Died on 9th Feb 2008
When we talk about contributions to society, Baba Amte's involvement in reducing the social stigma around Leprosy stands out. That's not only because he worked tirelessly in his pursuit of normalisation, he was one of the first people to bring the agony of Leprosy patients into the public eye.
Born in Maharasthra in 1914, Murlidhar Devidas Amte was well-protected from the anxieties that were faced by the average Indian under British Rule at that time. He was born into a wealthy upper-caste family, his father worked as a British Government officer. Despite his upbringing, he was sympathetic to the downtrodden and the marginalised and tried to help them in whatever capacity was possible for him.
